A carpenter went to work in a village, but forgot to take his hammer with him. He went to the village blacksmith and said, 'Make me a nice hammer.
I left my hammer at home.' The
blacksmith said, ' I will make it but you will have to wait for two days.
I need a good iron for the
hammer. Will get it tomorrow.'
In two days the blacksmith made a
hammer and gave it to the carpenter. The hammer was really cool. The carpenter
felt very comfortable working with him. One day a contractor approached the
blacksmith on the recommendation of the carpenter.
While placing a large order for
hammers, he also said that 'Make better hammers than the ones made before.' The
blacksmith said, 'Can't make better than him. When I make something, I do not
keep any deficiency in it, no matter who gets it made.
Slowly the fame of the blacksmith
spread everywhere. One day a big businessman came from the city and said to the
blacksmith, ' I will give you one and a half times the price, the condition
will be that in future you will make all the hammers only for me. You will not
make a hammer and sell it to others.'
The blacksmith refused and said,
' I am completely satisfied with this price. I want to determine the value of
my hard work myself. I cannot become a medium of exploitation of someone else
for your benefit.
The more money you give me, you
will charge twice as much from the poor buyers. The burden of my greed will
fall on the poor, while I want them to benefit from my skills. I cannot accept
your offer.'
