Why does Russia have more Muslims than the US?

Because Russia is part of the Muslim world, just like it is part of the Christian world. 1/5 of the population of Russia are ethnic Muslims (belong to ethnic groups that traditionally profess Islam).

Muslims are: Tatars (the 2nd most populous ethnic group in Russia), Bashkirs (4th), Chuvash (5th, partly Muslims), Chechens (6th), Avars (8th), Kazakhs (10th), Azerbaijanis (11th), Dargins (12th), Udmurts (13th, partly Muslims), Kumyks (18th), Lezgins (20th), Ingush (22nd), Uzbeks (24th ), etc. In total, about 50 ethnic groups out of 193 ethnic groups in Russia are traditionally Muslim - this is about 20-30 million of the 146 million inhabitants of Russia.

Kul Sharif (Kazan) is one of the most beautiful mosques in Russia:
