Because, believe it or not, Greece is not a
secular country!
As such Religious authorities have the
right to perform some civic actions. And because it would be unfair that only
the Christian Orthodox Church do it, the same rights are granted to regions
with Muslim populations.
However….
When Sharia laws are mentioned
people in the West think of this:
In reality Sharia Laws in Greece are NOT
about criminal justice but rather of settling family disputes (e.g.
inheritance).
The problem and the disagreements with
Turkey is that there are… two Muslim leaders (Muftis) in the Greek Thrace
region. One is appointed by the Greek state and one elected directly by the
Muslim population. Although, according to the Greek side, those who participate
in this “election process” are not average Greek Muslims but rather… Turkish
agents and their cronies.
I’m not even going to go into that debate.
Greece should immediately remove all
administrative and civic functions from all Churches and Mosques. Then, let the
people have their priests, imams, bishops and muftis without any state
intervention.
Problem Solved!
Human rights court rules against
Greece in Sharia law case | Kathimerini
We had to wait till 2018 to pass a law that allows Civil Courts to have priority over religious leader decisions. And we did that under pressure.
