Who are the 10 best Muslim commanders or leaders in history?

I assume the question is referring to the best Muslim military generals in history.

There have been many Muslim commanders in history who accomplished quite a bit during their military career for their own eras. This list is my take on those that I would say were the top ten among them. This only takes into consideration their ability as a military commander. Note that these are not placed in any sort of order. It is just the top ten being listed.

Note : This list is based on my personal take or opinion on the most skilled Muslim military commanders in history. It was hard to narrow down so many into just ten, so quite a few that I would have liked to add had to be left out. I chose to select a few from each era from the earliest days of Islam to the modern era.

Anyways, here is my list:

Khalid ibn al-Walid (592 – 642) - Khalid ibn al-Walid, also known as Sayf Allah (“Sword of God”), is one of the most renowned and greatest military commanders in history. He will go down in history as being one of the few generals who went undefeated (pretty much) throughout their military career. He played a significant role in the conflicts in the era of the Rashidun Caliphate.

Sa'ad ibn Abi Waqqas (595 – 674) - Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas was also one of the military commanders that played a significant role in early Islamic history. He was the Arab general that was largely responsible for the Rashidun conquest of the Sassanid Empire of Iran.

Mahmud of Ghazni (971 – 1030) - Mahmud ibn Sabuktigin, the founder of the Ghaznavid Empire, would have to be on this list. He was probably the greatest military commander of his era. His led extremely successful military campaigns into Central Asia, Iran, and the Indian Subcontinent. His conquests in every direction transformed the city state of Ghazni into one of the most powerful empires of the time.

Saladin Ayyubi (1137 – 1193) - Salah al-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub, the founder of the Ayyubid Empire, is one of the best known Muslim military commanders in history. He is best known for the role he played against the Crusader states during the Third Crusade.

Alauddin Khalji (1266 – 1316) - Alauddin Khalji was the Sultan of Delhi of the Khalji Dynasty. An extremely competent and ruthless military commander and statesman. He played a large role in revitalising the military machine of the Sultanate of Delhi. He is known for his military expansion within the Indian Subcontinent, as well as defensive warfare against the Mongol invasions into India.

Timur Gurkani (1336 - 1405) - Emir Timur or Tamerlane was without a doubt the greatest Muslim conqueror in history; as well as one of the most ruthless. A crippled man that rose from nothing to form one of the most powerful empires of the time; the dominant power within the Islamic world. His ability as a military commander can be seen by his decisive victories against the Sultanate of Delhi, Golden Horde, Moghulistan, Ottoman Empire, and Mamluk Sultanate.

Selim the Grim (1470 – 1520) - Sultan Selim the Grim of the Ottoman Empire is quite underrated as a military commander. His crushing victory over the Safavid Empire and conquest of the Mamluk Sultanate transformed the Ottoman Empire into the most dominant power in the Islamic world. He was responsible for one of the greatest periods of expansionism in a short period of time.

Nader Shah (1698 – 1747) - Nader Shah Afshar, the founder of the Afsharid Empire, would be the last great conqueror of Asia. His military revolution saw the rise of a military machine capable of going toe-to-toe with the greatest powers of the time. His military genius can be seen in any of his great victories against the Hotak Afghans, Mughal Empire, Uzbek Khanates, or Ottoman Empire. His short-lived Afsharid Empire, forged by the sword, was the largest version of the Iranian state since the Sassanid Empire.

Muhammad Ali Pasha (1769 – 1849) - Muhammad Ali Pasha is probably one of the most underrated Muslim military commanders. An Ottoman military commander of Albanian origin that would go on to establish his own de facto rule over Egypt, Sudan, Hejaz, and the Levant via military actions. Had it not been for European intervention, we may have seen the rise of a new dominant power in the Islamic world based out of Egypt.

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881 – 1938) - Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founding father of the modern Republic of Türkiye, was probably the most successful Muslim (even if only nominally) military commander in the modern era. An Ottoman military commander that would distinguish himself in the final days of the Ottoman Empire, before leading a war of independence using scattered remains for the Turkish Republic against encroaching powers.
