In human history, many men have sired numerous children, but one man's prodigious procreation stands head and shoulders above the rest. This man is none other than the last Sharifian Emperor of Morocco, Moulay Ismail ibn Sharif.
Ruling from 1672 to 1727, Moulay Ismail is
reported to have fathered a staggering 867 children! Yes, you read that
correctly. According to Guinness World Records, he had fathered a total of 525
sons and 342 daughters by 1703 and achieved his 700th son in 1721. Some reports
even suggest he had as many as 1,171 children, but the lower figure is more
widely accepted.
How did this come about? Well, Moulay
Ismail maintained a harem of about 500 concubines and had four official wives.
The women were sequestered in lavish palaces and had a regiment of eunuchs to
guard them. Moulay Ismail's passion for fathering children was reportedly
driven by two factors - his virility and a desire to ensure he had a clear
successor to his throne.
