Some Reasons The Frock Coat Has Stood The Test Of Time

By Paul Budde

Many clothing styles have lasted through several years and are still being worn today. While some garments are rarely worn, there are others that are part of many different styles.Check out how the frock coat has been a part of mens clothing for many, many years and still is today.

In the days men were herding cattle and living on ranches, wearing coats that were warm and comfortable at the same time was important. Herding cattle meant you had to be able to move around easily. The frock style allowed this movement while also providing warmth through the lower skirting in its design. The double breasted version was a popular choice for this reason.

Pastors also wore these kinds of coats during the 1800's and early 1900's. Generally, suede leather or wool were used to make the coats, but cotton also became popular for warmer weather. The coats of this style today are still made using the same materials. Black leather has become a popular choice for the frock styles of today as well.

The days of the old west means most men carried a rifle or pistol with them every where they traveled. While in some cases, having a gun was a necessity, there were some place you might want to keep it hidden. To avoid frightening everyone in town, many men wore rifle frocks, coats designed to hold a long rifle. These styles are still around today as well.

If you are a country music fan, you have most likely seen several musicians wearing this type of coat. You may have also seen the outfits men usually wear with these coats also. The pants worn should be straight leg styles while a vest is an absolute addition as well. Owning a few vests can allow you to have several outfits with the same coat.

The first frocks were worn by Charles II in the 1600's. He saw similar styles worn in robes by Polish delegates and had coats fashioned from that style. The coats of today have been altered with smaller cuffs, darker, less vibrant colors, and straighter skirting below the waistline. The colors today have been said to reflect the colors also used by the military.

The frock coat of today certainly has great and interesting history. You might be interested in knowing how many people collect these garments. Some antique styles are worth a great deal. You might keep this mind when you are shopping at a rummage sale and come across old coats of this style.
