Security systems are necessary for many homeowners and virtually all businesses. Many crimes are crimes of opportunity, and a business without a security system will be a sitting duck for a casual thief. Homes, while not as vulnerable of a target, are still easily burglarized, and often have less reinforced doors and window than a typical office building.

Security systems fall into three main categories: deterrent, prevention, and alert. Ancient or medieval systems involved physical means for removing or incapacitating intruders, and while many home or business owners might wish for such an arrangement, legal issues prevent them. The most effective security systems not only sound an alarm in the building they are securing, but also automatically notify the police.

A basic system operates simply and easily for a home or business owner, but is virtually impossible for a criminal to hack or break. Modern systems often include an option whereby the owner can check the status of the alarm remotely, via smart phone or computer. This allows for a greater degree of safety for two reasons.

First of all, being able to monitor the status of a building in real time is the next best thing to actually guarding it personally. Secondly, a good system will call the police after a set time. However, because a false alarm is expensive, many home or business owners opt to have that period of time be longer, or set the alarm to never contact the police automatically. But, with a cheaper penalty comes increased risk. With a remotely monitored system, the homeowner can manually verify whether or not an alert is a false alarm. In this way, increased security does not have to translate to increased cost.

Commercial security systems are generally more complex than a home system. While homes are generally small enough to be set as one zone, a commercial building might have areas that are more secure than others. For example, a lobby might need to be open during the day, but secured at night, while the offices are secured at all times. Most commercial buildings have areas that should be accessible only to select people. A system of keycards and individual codes and passwords is an effective way to accomplish this. Keycards, as opposed to mechanical locks and keys, are also an effective way to track who opens which doors and when. This is most crucial if a break in using a key occurs during the night.
