Why Learning A Little Spanish Can Get You A Long Way

By Robert Nickel

So you're heading to Mexico for a little getaway and you're thinking you might want to learn a little Espanol (Spanish), yes the lesson just started. Great idea! Though most people in Mexico, especially in the tourism industry, know at least some English if not being fluent in English, it is still a great idea to learn a few phrases for your outings to the markets or even if just to say a hello or thank you to your door man or waiter at the resort. So let's get started!

If you were raised to have good manners, which I'm sure you were, you will want to be able to say please to your service providers or people you run into on the street while on vacation. "Please" is said "Por Favor", pronounced "Pore Fah-vore".

Of course if you learn how to say please you should also know how to say thank you. In Spanish you may either say "Gracias" (Thank you) pronounced "Grah-see-ahs" or "Muchas Gracias" (Thank you very much, Many thanks) pronounced "Moo-chas Grah-see-ahs". However you choose to say it, saying thank you to someone in their native language is always a positive thing!

And if someone thanks you of course you'll need to say "You're Welcome" in Spanish which is "De Nada", pronounced "Deh Nah-da". And with that you are officially ready to be polite in Spanish! Now on to some other commonly used words that will come in handy during your travels.

What do you say when you pick up the phone, run into a friend or walk into a restaurant? "Hello", it's probably one of the most commonly used words worldwide, though said differently in each language of course. So how do we say hello in Spanish? "Hola", pronounced "Ola", like "Cola" but without the C.

Another two words very commonly used, maybe even more than hello is yes and no. "Yes" is"Si", pronounced "See" and "No" is very easy as it is also "No" in Spanish and pronounced quite similarly, "Noh".

You may want to say "Buenos Dias" (Good Day), pronounced "Bwen-nohs Dee-ahs" throughout the day when you cross paths with someone or "Buenos Noches" (Good Evening, Good Night), pronounced "Bwen-nohs Noh-ches" in the evening or at night.

When heading out from your hotel and passing the door man you could say "Hasta Luego" meaning "See you later" and pronounced "Ahs-ta Lew-egoh". Or if you are leaving and simply want to say goodbye you would say "Adios", pronounced "Ah-dee-ose".

With these few words and phrases you will feel more a part of the culture you are visiting in Mexico, pronounced "May-hee-co", and you will be sure to put a few smiles on the faces of those around you.

So in a quick recap we learned the following:

Spanish - Espanol Please - Por Favor Thank You - Gracias Thank You Very Much/Many Thanks - Muchas Gracias You're Welcome - De Nada Hello - Hola Yes - Si No - No Good Day - Buenos Dias Good Evening/Night - Buenos Noches See You Later - Hasta Luego Goodbye - Adios

And if you forget everything try to remember this one, "Habla Ingles?" pronounced "Ah-blah Een-glace" meaning "Do you speak English?".

Happy Travels!
