The Responsibilities Of An Undertaker In A Funeral Service

By Gadiv Alvarez

Undertakers, who are also known as funeral directors, are people who are next in importance to the family of the departed and the clergymen when it is about funeral services. These are people who help you arrange the funeral, right from the start to the end. The task of undertakers is of such nature that they have to be on call anytime of the day and on any day in the year.

In the wake of such a huge loss, the bereaved family may not be able to take fast decisions regarding the service and final disposition of the body. This is where the undertaker enters the scene and takes over. He assists you in deciding the time, place and type of the funeral rites and services for the dead. In Addition, the undertaker helps you in coming to terms with your loss, as he stays by your side and plans the entire funeral, allowing you to reflect upon your immense love and respect for the departed person.

The first and foremost step in planning any funeral service is to deliberate upon the time, place and date of the funeral service, so that the same can be communicated to friends and family. After this has been decided, the undertaker makes preparations for shifting the body to the funeral home or where it is to be laid to rest. In case the body is to be buried, the undertaker helps in selecting the appropriate casket for the deceased.

The undertaker takes care of every detail of the funeral service, including arranging for flowers, transport, luncheon, priests, choristers, ashes and headstone, and any other detail that should be focused upon. All preparations are made by the undertaker in consultation with the family to ensure that the deceased is truly treated with respect.

Finally, some undertakers also help in appropriate embalming and shipment of the body if required, and in preparation and arranging for the funeral service in another nation if the person has died abroad.
