Redecorating The Retro Way

By Carol Porter

Few themes stand out as a classic style. One that has stood the test of time and upheld the quality and beauty of its style. One such theme is the retro style. From fashion, music, movies and interior design, retro theme continues to perk people's interest. You can relive this celebrated era by decorating your home with a retro theme.

Home decor in the Seventies involved more than just the typical lava lamps or funky light fixtures. It was more about the then popular hippie philosophy of anything-goes expression. Recreating that means using far-out combinations of colors and textures - even ones that don't seem to go together! The Seventies theme will be created by a few key pieces that you have to have.

Furniture - the 70s ushered the curves and lines. Round-shaped chairs and beds, and abstract-shaped tables are just some of the examples of the vogue items in the 70s. Beanbags were also a must-have item during this time, so picking out a few pieces to adorn the rooms in your home is a surefire retro design, especially those in bright or loud colors. What a relief to still have beanbags around!

Fabric - beads are in for retro decorating. The hippie lifestyle is artistic in approach, so you can embellish your fabrics like curtains and throw pillow cover with these accents. You can even hang a beaded drape in the doorway for a more eclectic design.

Area rugs - go for loud colors. Shag rugs are ideal to go with this theme. If you are rather reserved with the use of colors, choosing earth colored rugs will do like greens and browns.

Accessories - relive the retro era with accessories that are trademarks of this time. Going to a flea market or a thrift store will give you many options. You can use lava lamps, artworks, funky items and photographs. Some souvenir specialty stores also sell period items and retro design is a favorite, so finding interesting stuff won't be difficult.
