Atheists cannot prove you wrong because there is a general understanding in the scientific community that you can’t prove a negative.
But before you go shouting
“gotcha! “and start doing some kind of victory dance, you need to understand
why this principle exists.
For example, prove to me that the
Greek gods don’t exist.
You might say ”I’ve climbed Mt.
Olympus and there are no gods there”.
But to this I say, “of course you
couldn’t see them because they are invisible”.
And you might say “there were
people everywhere, even if they were invisible people would bump into them”.
But I respond “no, sorry, That
wouldn’t happen because they are in a parallel dimension”.
“So how do you know they are
there? “
“They speak to ne with telepathy
and I have magic powers that let me access their world through a magic
wardrobe”.
At this point, you are probably
assuming I’m completely off my rocker but the truth is that I can keep
improvising explanations ad infinitum. They may seem stupid to you but that is
just a judgement on your part. The truth is, my claims are unfalsifiable. They
cannot really be tested because I move the goal posts constantly.
You can never actually prove the
Olympian pantheon doesn’t exist but you can certainly convlude that it is not
worth your while to care. To all intents and purposes, all the available
evidence indicates the Olympians do not exist.
Thus endeth the lesson.
Now, when it comes to other
beliefs we might hold, the principle is exactly the same. TThere is no
falsifiable evidence to justify assuming God exists, so most atheists follow up
with the not unreasonable conclusion that all gods are equally imaginary.
