Protect Yourself From Home Burglary

By Mark Mahaffey

Here is a statistic that may shock you: it only takes around 15 minutes for someone to break into your home and steal thousands of dollars' worth of your possessions. With this in mind, it is easy to see why as a home owner, you are wise to make every effort to keep your home and family as safe as possible.

Doors and windows are one of the most likely areas that criminals gain access into your house. Therefore, your home security plan should include the discipline of making sure your windows and doors stay locked as much as possible. This makes it much more difficult for a thief to break into your house.

Your next strategy should be to make it hard for a crook to break in by other means. For example, do you have a fence around your yard combined with a driveway gate? You should, because a tall fence and a gate make it difficult for a crook to actually get to your home.

A dog is another way to keep burglars away. A barking dog is a wonderful alarm system. People inside and outside your home will know something is up when your dog begins barking incessantly! Crooks do not like to break into homes with a dog.

It is also a good idea to install a home security system. Many criminals admit that they would not break into a house that had a home security system installed. This is because a system such as this can be programmed to detect the criminal and let you and your monitoring company know.

Motion detectors are your friend when it comes to building a home alarm system. Put these both inside and outside your home, so you will know if an unsavory character tries to approach your home or if someone actually breaks in.
