Nose Job Capital of the World: Beverly Hills or Tehran

By Dr Payman Simoni

Let's imagine how people in Iran look like. Women wearing black Chadoors walking along heavy bearded men. Wrong! How about, women with perfect make up wearing trendy outfit. Chances are that they had a nose job. Most Persian boys and girls want smaller noses to look almost like Barbie. Dr Payman Simoni, a Beverly Hills rhinoplasty specialist, explains. With Over 100,000 rhinoplasty surgeries per year Iran has been the nose job capital of the world.

A woman's beauty takes a centerpiece in Persian culture. ''Kill me, but make me beautiful,'' one Iranian proverb goes. ''The beautiful face soothes the tired heart and opens the closed door,'' goes another. Since the Arab invasion of Iran over a thousand years ago, the Islamic laws have been trying to limit the display of female beauty by enforcing Islamic dress code. Iran's new strict Islamic enforcement by the recent regime has been called the second Arab invasion by many. Where the women face is the only visible part of the body it is understandable that the nose can take a major attention. The Influenced of western culture through internet and satellites, Hollywood noses are the Persian women's vision. The aspiration among attractive Persian women to look like Snow White is bizarre but it is a direct answer to authority's failing attempts to turn them to look like bats and crows.

There have reportedly been more nose jobs in Iran recently than in any other country in the world. Persian women are flocking plastic surgery offices like nowhere else in the world. Right after leaving Tehran's plastic surgeons' operating rooms, women rush to their favorite coffee shops to show off a new bandaged badge-of-honor noses. Some even wear fake bandages just for the show off. Now It's becoming increasingly common for Iranian men to have cosmetic surgery too.

The market for the doctors specializing in nose and other facial plastic surgeries is wonderful. Unfortunately, there has been many botched up plastic surgeries from operations carried out by unqualified physicians. As a result, Iran's justice ministry has advanced department dealing with these types of malpractice cases. Between 2001 and 2004, about three thousand cases reported, leading to written rebuke and suspensions of numerous doctors.

In Beverly Hills and Los Angeles, one of the largest communities of Iranian outside Iran, nose job still remains one of the most requested surgeries by Persian women. Dr Simoni, a Beverly Hills facial plastic surgeon, explains. In United state too non qualified surgeons are allowed to perform rhinoplasty. Rhinoplasty is by far the most difficult of all the plastic surgeries thus Dr Simoni recommends board certified facial plastic surgeons.
