This is an ancient temple of lord Venkataramana in Mulki in remote coastal Karnataka.
Situated on the bank of river
Shambhavi, the little town of Mulki is home to numerous temples dating back to
6th century. Among those are the Venkataramana and Ugra Narasimhaswamy temples.
It was a peaceful little town filled with scores of devout Hindus.
All this changed when Islamic
invaders began attacking and looting temples across the region like any other
day as the only thing which they did across India.
The priests of the Mulki dropped
the Utsava murthis of Lord into a well inside the temple to keep it safe from
invaders. So, Lord could be safe from the Invaders who would possibly plunder
and loot the temple.
Few days ago, the priests found
centuries-old manuscripts that gave them a clue. They began digging at the said
spot, at the spot described they didn’t find any well as described.
After digging for few inches they
found the mouth of an ancient well, hidden few feet below the slabs.
They dug further and the well
emerged!
And they found this beautiful
idol inside the well!!
The little pooja murti of Sri
Venkatramana Swamy.
Shri Venkataramana – God of
Prosperity [1]
This temple is comparatively a
less famous temple compared to other Temples like Srirangam. If this is the
case for this small temple think about others.
