Here’s a list of animals that can hold their breath the longest, starting from shortest, to insanely long periods of time.
Hippo’s can hold their breath for
5 minutes. Kind of disappointing considering the amount of time they spend in
the water.
Dolphins can hold their breath
for 10 minutes, again not that great considering the live in the water.
Seal Lions can hold their breath
for 20 minutes, fun fact, Sea lions are closer to being bears then their name
might suggest.
Penguins can hold their breath
for up to half hour and they do that by slowing their heart rates down to about
3 beats per minute, and they have more hemoglobin than we do.
Sloths can hold their breaths for
up to 40 minutes, to be fair their ancestors were giant marine sloths.
Interesting, because you would think something that lives in the ocean could
hold its breath longer.
Sperm Whales can hold their
breath for up to 2 hours and it could be longer if they weren't battling giant
squids down there.
Sea Turtles can hold their breath
for up to 5 to 7 hours, and most of that’s while they’re asleep.
Sea Snakes, for some 8 hours.
Although the fact they can breathe through their skin helps.
Spiders can hold their breath for
up to 40 hours. In an experiment a Wolf Spider came back to life after 40 hours
under water by going into a state of suspended animation.
Scorpions hold the crown as they can hold their breath for an amazing 6 days. Their modified lungs, which are known as book lungs, allows them to hold their breath for long periods at a time.
