The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), the founder of Islam, was born in Mecca, in present-day Saudi Arabia, in the year 570 CE. Mecca was his birthplace and the initial center of his mission. Muhammad received the first revelations of the Quran at the age of 40 while meditating in the Cave of Hira, located near Mecca.
Muhammad spent a significant part of his life in Mecca, preaching the message of monotheism and calling people to worship the one God, Allah. However, due to opposition from the leaders of Mecca, he and his followers faced persecution.
In 622 CE, Muhammad, along with his followers, made the migration (Hijra) from Mecca to the city of Yathrib (later known as Medina), which marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar. Medina became the base for the early Muslim community, and Muhammad continued his mission there. He lived in Medina until his passing in 632 CE.
The cities of Mecca and Medina are considered two of the holiest cities in Islam, and Muslims around the world face towards the Kaaba in Mecca during their daily prayers.
