What is the most interesting archaeological discovery ever made?
Of all the things that have been dug up
from the ancient world, this is the one I wish I could make everyone aware of.
In the picture above is the unfinished Obelisk in Aswan, Egypt. You can see
people on it. It's massive, lying on its back at over 140 ft tall.
It hasn't fallen over on its side, and it
wasn't buried. It's unfinished, and this is how they used to make them. They
would find a good patch of solid granite bedrock and chisel the obelisk out by
hand. To free it from the rock, they would cut holes into the bottom part and
insert wooden wedges underneath. Then, they would soak the wedges in water, and
the expansion of the water would crack it free.
They would then have to lift this 2
million-pound hunk of rock and move it to its base, which they also found a
short distance away.
The reason why I find it so interesting is
the picture above. Firstly, you can see the chisel marks on the side of the
obelisk from the workers' hand tools. However, at some point, after months or
probably years of working on this magnificent structure, a crack appeared in
the obelisk, and they had to abandon it.
How many abandoned attempts were made? All of that wasted labour, dashed hopes, and countless hours spent under the scorching sun, only to eventually turn and walk away. It's remarkable to think that 3,500 years later, it still there.
