The Balinese refers to a domestic cat species that features similar point coloration as those of Siamese but with a coat that has medium to long hair in length. Because it mutated from Siamese, people often refers to it as purebred long-haired Siamese although to a lesser extent. The only observable differences with Siamese are a plumed tail and silky long-haired coat. Many people own this cat in their homes because they make excellent family pets. There is a lot of similarity between Balinese and Siamese in all other ways. For example, their heads triangular or wedge-shaped, eyes are blue, they have striking color points, and the ears are large. They are the same size as Siamese and the body is masculine. The striking resemblance resulted from mutation and interbreeding of Siamese. Otherwise, the cats are the same but wear different coats and have neat oval paws.

The name of this cat has nothing to do with the Bali Island in Indonesia. It came up after several interbreeding experiments to reveal the recessive long hair gene in Siamese. Initially, it was referred to as long-haired Siamese, a name that was considered to be too long. Thus, the name was changed to Balinese in reference to Balinese dancers. The cat has also evolved into two separate varieties based on their physical type.

This cat has a coat that is medium in length and is silky and soft. However, differences have been observed among individuals regarding length of the coat. The characteristic fluffy undercoat in other long-haired breeds lacks. Mating two Balinese produces an offspring with longer hair coat. Eye color ranges between sapphire and blue with the intensity of the color varying with diet and age.

Kittens are born pure white or cream and start developing visible points in parts of their body that are colder gradually. These include paws, tail, ears, and face. By the time they reach the age of four weeks, the color is usually identifiable. Color of the coat tends to darken more with age. Those that live in regions with warm climate have lighter coats compared to those in colder regions.

Chocolate, blue, lilac, and seal are the four colors of this cat that are accepted by cat fanciers everywhere in the world. Those that have red, cream point, lynx point, and tortoiseshell coats are categorized differently as Javanese. The Indonesian island, Java has no relationship to the name Javanese.

Like its ancestor Siamese, this breed exhibits a high level of playfulness, intelligence, and sociability. It is usually interested in activities going on around it and prefers vocalizing in a lower voice. Among all breeds with long hair, this cat is considered to be the most intelligent. They love human company so much and they feel happy when in company of their owner.

Compared to other breeds, people with allergies find less trouble with this breed. This is as a result of the lower amount of Fel d1 and d4 they produce. A lot of research is being done by breeding organizations and clubs to determine the existence of the hypoallergenic quality.
