A Guide To Choosing Furniture

By Jennifer Warner

There are certain elements of an interior design scheme that are going to draw more attention than others. Out of all of them, furniture is perhaps the most important, which is why you should keep certain things in mind when choosing furniture while updating the design scheme in your home, or starting fresh in a new home.

Have a Good Idea of What You Like

If you have lived in your own place for some time, then you probably already know what you like and what you do not. But if you still have not nailed down what your style is, the best way to find out is to go window shopping. Have a look at some furniture stores and catalogs. Chances are, you will find something that catches your eye.

With the vast range of styles available, finding a starting point will help narrow the rest of the search and save you some time. If you find yourself drawn to more than one style, you might see how well they work combined as a hybrid style. Different does not always mean incompatible.

Fusing Styles

Fusing styles together is one of the best ways to create a look that is uniquely you. Some things are very different, but still compatible. If you are not sure, try showing some pictures of the prospective items to an interior designer, or at least a friend with a good sense of style.

Do not be afraid to mix colors either. As long as the color values remain consistent, you might be surprised by how well seemingly contrasting colors can work together.

Quality is Important

Quality very much matters when choosing furniture. Just because it looks good or is an affordable price does not necessarily mean it is a good choice. If cheap furniture is not built to last, you would be better off investing in high-quality pieces that are going to be with you for a long time.

Markdowns and sales can be a godsend for furniture hunter. But still, be mindful of the quality. Give it a good check before buying. Drawers should glide over the track cleanly and smoothly. Chairs should be stable enough to not wobble. Upholstery should not have fraying seems or messy patterns. And solid, natural wood is always better than things like particleboard.

Find an Ageless Style

If you find importance in having a modern-looking home, make sure that the larger furniture pieces will work well with changing styles. Smaller items tend to go out of style quicker, but they are easier to replace. Larger ones, on the other hand, or more of an investment, so be sure to choose ones that you will be happy with for the long run.

Enjoy Yourself!

Creating a design scheme should be a fun process for all involved. Your furniture should bring up positive feelings and memories. Have fun with process and don't be afraid to experiment!
