Choosing Compote Candles For Your Home

By Harriet Porter

Fruit cooked in a syrup is referred to as a compote and this is probably the most common usage of this word today. Another usage, however, is to refer to a bowl made of brass, porcelain or metal with a base and stem. This bowl was used to serve fruit, candy or nuts. Today, bowls like this are made of other materials too and can be used for many different purposes. It is often used as a container for a candle. Compote candles add soft lighting and ambiance to any setting.

One of the most important functions of a candle today is to introduce fragrance. A calming fragrance can release stress and a spicy one may be used to quicken the senses and stimulate conversation. There are so many to choose from such as spicy vanilla, lemongrass verbena, cranberry and sweet mango. People often discover a favorite that they love and this becomes a signature fragrance that fills their home.

When choosing a candle, the material from which it is made is also important. Many are made from paraffin wax and these are cheaper but a number of manufacturers have changed to other materials that are more eco-friendly and burn purely and cleanly. Soy wax and coconut oil are just two of these. Beeswax has used for centuries and is non-toxic and long burning.

If you are wanting a candle for a special occasion, a large one in a crystal bowl is very fitting. Items like this are available from a number of stores, including online ones. A large candle will burn steadily for a long time and some stores even offer to refill the bowl.

A larger candle, unlike a tapered one, often has more than one wick and some even have three or four. The way a candle burns depends very much on the type of wick used. In the past lead was used in wicks to stiffen them but as people have become aware of the dangers of lead, this practice has changed. Most wicks are now made only from cotton or other natural materials.

Some suppliers have spent years developing their complex blends of fragrances. Tempting combinations of essential and perfume grade oils are available from online stores. Choose from a blend of almond extract, rich butter, cane sugar and cinnamon or a calming blend of strawberries, vanilla, and coconut milk with jasmine and rose petals.

The prices of these products vary greatly, depending on height, width, type of materials used and other factors. The most expensive ones are often bought for use on special occasions. They can be burnt even before guests arrive to create a specific aroma in a room. Others are suitable for use on a more regular basis.

When making a choice from an online store, you are confronted by a huge variety of products. This can be very enticing but it can make choice difficult. Think about what you want to use the candle for and make a selection accordingly. Read customer reviews to find out what they experienced. All this can help you to make a suitable selection.
