There are many things that have been piling up around the house. These are usually located in storage rooms, on shelves in the laundry area and in the garage as well as the attic. You have been tripping over some of them and it is just time to remove them from those spaces. You could call a dumpster or start planning a garage sale.
Proper planning is appropriate for these events. Setting just the right mood for displaying everything is important. Everything you want to move must be displayed, however, nothing that is not for sale should be available for touching. Whether the sale takes place in the garage, itself, or also in the driveway or yard, all must be arranged for ease of browsing.
The garage should be cleaned up and have plenty of lights available. The large door should, of course, be open. This makes it easy for people to understand there is no danger in going in. Tables should be placed, if the garage is large enough, to display anything that is too small to hang or set on the floor. Tables can be set outside of this space also.
One of the things that make people uncomfortable when looking at garage sale items is dirty things. The clothes should be cleaned and dry. Anything that normally hangs should be hung up. A rope, strung through a pipe or around a wood handle, will accomplish this. When there is dirt on things people have a tendency to move down the block to the next display.
All tools can be displayed, either on hanging pegs or around the work bench. Any tools that are rusty can either be dipped in a petroleum jelly and wiped down or simply placed in a tub which is marked as is. Many people like to look through these kinds of tubs, thinking they are going to find something interesting. Often what you may not think is unique may be to them.
Thinking about customer service is something many people do not do. If there are any electrical items to be sold, make sure there are plenty of electrical supply lines for these. That may mean stringing an extension cord out there. They will buy some of the weirdest things, but if it is electrical, they always want to know it works.
You will need to have a cash box and some change available. To be able to give the proper amount of change will make negotiating a little easier. Some pens or pencils and a pad of paper will help you keep track of sales and or taxes owed because of this little temporary enterprise. Something to be aware of are the professional shoppers that usually show up before you open your doors.
The learning part and some of the heart pulling that happens is as you are taking things out of the storage boxes and remembering when or how you got them. You will see things you have not seen in a while. Some of these items will end up back in the storage boxes and sealed a little tighter and that is alright too.
