Enjoy The Wind River WY

By Marci Glover

The United States is a huge country with many excellent vacation destinations. In fact, with so much to choose from it can be quite a challenge to decide which places to visit. For those who love the outdoors, spectacular scenery and history there is no better place than the state of Wyoming. It is well located and within driving distance from the west coast. Even visitors from the east sometime elect to drive so they can bring their camping equipment or motor home.

The Bridger Wilderness area is named after the famous explorer Jim Bridger. It extends well over four hundred thousand acres and was established back in 1964. The Wind River WY is part of this spectacular area and includes some of the highest mountains in the state. In fact there are over forty mountain peaks that exceed 13,000 feet in height, including Gannett Peak the highest in Wyoming.

The region has been home to the Arapaho Indians for hundreds of years. Their respect for the environment is still a big part of the landscape and every effort has been made to continue these traditions. As the river snakes along the Continental Divide it creates a stunning combination of scenery. The massive mountain ranges provide a stunning backdrop to every scene. Travellers should bring a good camera with them as they will be using it a lot.

Serious hikers will need to have up to date maps and know how to use a compass. They should also carry plenty of warm clothing as there can be sub zero temperatures even in the summer. Sudden thunder storms are common in July and August, there may even be snow squalls at the higher elevations.

Education can be a big part of a Wyoming vacation. It is one of the best places to learn about the environment. There are so few places left in the country where people can experience true wilderness. It is totally awe inspiring to see how the land looked before it was settled and covered in homes and businesses. Visitors often say that they leave with a new appreciation for nature and the great outdoors.

In this remote back country cell phone service tends to be unreliable. For this reason it is vital to have good maps and a compass. One of the best ways to enjoy the area is with an experienced guide. These are people with many years of wilderness training. They are very familiar with the geology and weather patterns. They can really make a huge difference as they bring an extra level of understanding to the trip. Hikes can be one day or up to a week. In these cases all the supplies must be carried in and a base camp set up.

There is a wonderful range of wildlife which provides a big attraction for tourists. This is one of the few places where elk, moose, bear, wolves and mountain lions can all be found. Wildlife photographers love the chance to snap some shots of these majestic animals in their natural habitat.

The local park ranger station is a good place to start any trip. The knowledgeable staff will give advice to visitors to help stay safe and really make the most of their vacation.
