Managed services is a term that is used to describe the practice of outsourcing. More specifically, outsourcing the day-to-day management functions and responsibilities. This is a method of strategy done in order to improve on operations and cut overall expenses.

A person or organization given or owning oversight of these systems or organizations being managed is called the offeror, client or customer. The party that is accepting and offering the service is recognized as the MSP or the service provider.

An offeror is usually in charge of performance and functionality of this service. They maintain responsibility and control of management, as this is not relinquished with the practice. Some of the most common duties handled in this manner: management of supply chain, water, power, media, applications, information, communication, integration between businesses, databases and postage.

The MSP is usually an IT provider or information technology services provider. Said person manages and maintains responsibility for offering a certain set of services to the clients in a proactive manner or based on what he or she believes is necessary. Most of these will bill upfront or include a transaction fee, as well as a near-fixed fee per month or a flat rate that is ongoing. This is beneficial for the client in that it guarantees support costs remain predictable.

The providers might be contracted for the purpose of managing several staffing agencies. In doing this, they will be given the job of measuring effectiveness in filling the various positions according to the requirements and standards of the customers. Essentially, the professionals serve as a neutral unit. They offer clients a full workforce solution while still ensuring operation and leverage to keep rates competitive.

MSPs, in these situations, typically employ a Vendor Management System or VMS. This is a software tool that provides efficiency and transparency related to all aspects of the contract and contingent workforce. The model has proven to be useful in the private sector, especially among Fortune 500 businesses. Furthermore, it is poised to become more commonplace in the government. MSPs typically use a special software called Remote Monitoring and Management or RMM in order to deploy and control assistance to their clients.

The business model that is associated with this has been used in enterprise companies. In more recent years it has been adapted to better fit medium and small companies. The model can be very beneficial to enterprises, especially those that have room to evolve and grow over time.

There are many groups that offer the full spectrum of services to help in relieving staff members of daily duties and operations within an infrastructure. Providers may allow clients to pick and choose what they need, customizing their order. This process is known to be a cost-effective option in many different industries and allows companies to free up resources and staff to focus on strategic plans within the organization. There are many potential benefits to this practice that will vary based on many factors.
