Egg Donation Made Simple

By Emma Marcum

The process of egg donation means that more and more couples are able to achieve their dream of becoming parents. Unfortunately, there are many couples who have tried to conceive naturally and for whom it has proved impossible. Fortunately, there are now clinical methods that make becoming a parent a true possibility for these people.

Since the procedures that are involved with this kind of donation are quite new, there is some misunderstanding or misconception around what is actually involved for both parties. For the potential parents, it is important to understand all the different aspects of such a process. In order to do so, it is best to talk in depth with your fertility doctor after having had professional diagnosis of your situation.

There are a couple of key services that are offered by fertility clinics to people who are looking to become parents. Some of the services that may be offered include in vitro fertilization, intra-uterine insemination and IUI with donor sperm. The clinic will be able to advise you on which particular procedure is the most appropriate for your set of circumstances.

If you are thinking of donating, there are also many aspects to consider. This is a very serious process and you will need to think it through before committing to it. After learning more about the process and deciding to go ahead with it, most women report that it is a very gratifying experience knowing they have helped someone to form a family.

Generally, you are required to undergo an initial screening. At this point, the clinic will take blood from you on the third day of your period. They will use this blood to run hormonal tests and at this time they may also perform an internal observation of your reproductive organs. It is also common to have a psychological assessment accompany this phase.

When you meet with the medical team, they will also run other tests. These tests will typically look for genetic problems as well as testing for sexually transmitted infections and drug or nicotine use. Once this phase has been completed satisfactorily, you will be admitted as an appropriate candidate and will be called upon to donate the ova.

When this doctor has approved you, then the legal phase begins. It is then that an attorney is appointed to you to guide you through the signing of contracts. Following this, you will be given medications to begin taking. Commonly you begin with a birth control pill in order to synchronize your cycle with the potential mother's. After this, you will have to take hormonal supplements to help the eggs mature.

Once the ova are mature, the egg donation can occur. In this phase, the female donor will undergo a procedure under light sedation. This takes approximately 30 minutes, with a two hour recovery time. While there is some discomfort involved, many of the women who choose to help couples by donating find this process immensely satisfying. Knowing that a couple can have a child due to your assistance is something truly special.
