California Free Divorce Records

The number of divorce records being filed in California is increasing. CA divorce records are among the documents that the local residents of California can request anytime and because of this it has become one of the most requested documents in the state.

Divorce records are regularly requested by the residents of California for a number of reasons. The document is used when the divorced couple would need to update their property declaration as well as their beneficiary list. It serves as proof of one's status especially when dealing with transactions that involves the couple such as insurance and the like. Aside from government transactions, divorce records are also used as reference when conducting genealogy research. It is not as important as other public documents when it comes to genealogy but it may still cause confusions for the future generation. If the divorcee has plans to remarry, the legal separation papers have to be presented during marriage application to be allowed to marry again.

As the name implies, the divorce record in the state of California would contain details about the separation of a couple. One would know the place and the date when the divorce was granted. The document would not be considered as valid without the names of the involved individuals. There are limitations as to what the public can see. Information such as the reason why the couple opted for divorce is not visible to the public. This also includes the child custody and the division of the couple's assets and properties.

Although, the divorce certificate is a public document, access to it is limited only to the divorcees and their direct family. A court order has to be presented when one needs to access the divorce files of other individuals. One should know the basic details of the record being requested. The requesting individual is required to indicate their contact details on the request form. By doing all of these, the search can be made easier.

One cannot get a certified copy at the office of the Vital Statistics office. Certified copies can only be released at the Clerk of Superior Court in the county where it was filed. Processing fee would differ per county. The state office can help provide information as to where to obtain a copy of a divorce certificate. It would cost $13 to identify the county where the divorce was registered. This is only applicable for records registered between 1962 and 1984 only. Request can also be sent via mail to the county of registration. The requirements and the payment should then be included in the request. Payments can be in the form of a money order or check. It can take several days or two weeks before the result of the search can be sent back.

The long wait can be avoided by using the Internet to obtain the divorce certificate. A lot of websites are now offering their services to obtain the document without any hassle and delay. A free divorce records search can even be done by using the free services of some websites. Although there are free searches online, many would still go for the paid search to get quality results.
