Some Great Fire Department Training Ideas

By Tiffany Gill

When one is a firefighter, it is very important that he is always on his toes because there could be a situation just any minute and he might need to go into action right away. That is why it is very important for the fire department to always have some good fire department training ideas so that the firefighters will always be alert. Here are some of the ideas that are really good for keeping firefighters alert.

Now it is best to hold these training sessions by surprise so that the response time of each firefighter will become sharper. That is why it is a must for all the departments to have regular drills so that the fighters may practice jumping into action right away. Since they do not know whether it is a drill or not, they will have no choice but to react immediately.

The controlled fire drill is also a very known training program and is usually done for the juniors or the newly recruited volunteers. Now this starts with the seniors looking for an old house that the owners would want to dispose of and burning it on the spot. The juniors or the newbies will then have to try to extinguish the flames by using techniques they learned.

Since the department would also be working with the paramedics and the law enforcement team, the three departments could actually put up some mock disasters so that the juniors can train. It will be like being in a real live situation where in one has to save people and bring him out of a burning house. This is practice for all three of the departments.

Now for the specific programs, there are also a lot of equipment training ideas that one will have to know. The adapter drill is one of them and it is used in order to test how long it will take for firefighters to attach a hose to the adapter. There will be two hoses of different sizes that should be attached to an adapter.

One will also be practicing how to put on their gear and uniform really quickly as well. Now seniors would usually time the juniors on how fast they are able to put their gear when a situation arises. From there, the seniors will be able to know who needs improvement in reaction time.

Of course firefighters in general are also given regular trivia tests to see how well they remember basic concepts. Usually the questions are situational questions where in the tester would ask fighters what they would do in a certain situation. This is to test their knowledge and see how well they would react in a circumstance.

So basically, those are some of the most common fire department training ideas that are out there. Of course there are still a lot of more training ideas where that came from but these are the most basic ones. They are definitely the ones that can keep them on their toes.
