Wet Benches And Wet Etching Process For Semiconductor

By Roy van Rivero

Wet etching used for semiconductor substrates processing is performed with the help of high tech equipment called wet benches (also known as wet process stations). Typically, these equipment are a fully-automated system that facilitates wet cleaning, etching, stripping, texturing, and plating operations. Wet benches are designed to have several tanks or modules that contain process solutions.

Several specific configurations can be done with wet benches so that they can fit to your unique needs. They can be:

Fully-automated wet bench - it includes load and unload stations; the substrates are fully-processed and dried by the end of the sequence.

Semi-automated wet bench -- this configuration has either linear or rotational transfer from one module to another (2,3 or 4 tanks in the sequence).

Manual wet bench -- this configuration requires an operator to manually move cassette from tank to tank.

Intelligent process station -- this comes with all the components of a fully-automated system plus control monitoring of the wet chemistries used in the process.

Wet bench manufacturers - the industries they serve:

Electronics -- electronic products manufacturers are an example of industry being served by wet bench manufacturers as semiconductor components are being used in various electronic devices (e.g. mobile phone, laptop and desktop computers, radio components, etc.)

Solar -- semiconductor components are also used for the production of solar panels utilized as an alternative energy source; it is also being used in solar panel system commonly installed in communication satellites and other astronomical endeavors.

MEMS -- the nanotechnology or microelectronic fabrication sector relies on semiconductor substrates for the production of integrated circuits, which are also being used in different electronic devices available in the market today.

LED -- wet benches can also help in manufacturing high brightness LEDs at lower cost than other conventional processes.

Bio-medical -- the bio-medical industry is also benefiting from the wet process as it helps for the production of technologies helpful in the medical field such as biochips and biosensors.

Disk drive -- this is another product that is produced with the help of wet bench manufacturers who help in the production of precise and reliable storage devices.

Wet bench manufacturers have been in business for quite some time and they continuously help several sectors, particularly those that rely on semiconductor components in their manufacturing processes.
