Finding a good pet means taking several things into consideration in order to make the best decision about which breed is the best match. Choosing one that has character traits one can deal with important to ensure that the new owner will be tolerant. Generally considered to be one of the smartest and sturdiest of the toy breeds, these pups are tiny, but tough. Their weight can range anywhere between seven and fourteen pounds and they can reach a height of 8.5" to 10.5". Their body shape is interesting as they are a bit longer than they are tall.

Their coat is silky, long and luxurious though most owners tend to keep them trimmed short both to keep that eternal puppy look and because left uncut it quickly becomes a tangled mess. It is actually very lightweight and can be most any shade of black, cream, white or brown, shedding very little, which is excellent for owners who suffer allergies. They have a look that is best described as distinguished and disheveled.

Body shape for this breed is easiest to describe as stocky and barrel chested with a curled plume tail that rides up over their straight back. The heads are kind of round and have high set ears that bend and hang. Their muzzles are short and rectangular, centered with a squared nose and featuring black lips.

In general, this is a breed that has very few health issues, though some eye problems may come with age and dry skin may occur if not properly groomed. Kept in good physical shape, these dogs tend to live up to fifteen years. They can be very active and playful but do have a few social needs of which any potential owner should be made aware.

Interested parties should make sure they are willing to dedicate a lot of time to these pets because they crave affection from humans. They love to frolic and play and obsessively seek cuddles, praises and lots of snuggles and petting. The problem is that they become a bit dependent on this attention and if they don't get enough they may act out through negative behaviors such as extra barking and destructive chewing.

It is important to socialize them while they are very young in order to develop their outgoing temperament and build the confidence that allows them to interact well with strangers. Most respond well to training techniques involving food rewards, especially when learning new tricks, obedience and working on agility. House breaking is the most difficult lesson for them to learn so new owners need to prepare to be patient and consistent.

Even though these dogs are not at all aggressive, they consider themselves excellent watchdogs and like to announce the arrival of anyone and everyone who approaches their home. Barking is one thing that owners will need to be willing to regularly tolerate or curtail. Their sweet, lovable nature is the foremost thing most people notice when checking out Havanese puppies for sale, as that is their most dominant trait.
