Breed Information About Australian Labradoodle Puppies North Carolina Owners Will Find Helpful

By Paulette Short

The Australian Labradoodle is a gentle, friendly, loyal and loving breed of dog. They are a great choice for people with allergies as many do not shed, and they are also commonly used as service and guide dogs. Before looking to adopt Australian Labradoodle puppies North Carolina dog lovers should first make sure they meet its specific needs.

What originally started as a straight cross between a Standard or Miniature Poodle and a Labrador Retriever in 1980's Australia, was further developed into a very special breed which bears the desirable characteristics of several other dogs including the American and English Cocker Spaniels, Curly Coat Retriever, and Irish Water Spaniel.

They have a medium stature, with heights ranging from 17 to 24 inches tall, and weighing between 30 and 75 pounds. Standard sized dogs are larger than miniatures. The dog's coat can be curly or wavy and either a full color or mix of shades such as black, cream, gold, silver, tan, chocolate, red, chalk, apricot, and apricot cream.

When the dog is between ten and fifteen months old, its coat will change the puppy stage into the adult stage. Non-shedders will need to have this first coat stripped away by a groomer so it doesn't get matted, but it will naturally fall off from those which do shed. In general, this breed requires trimming two or three times per year and a weekly brushing. They don't have much of a "doggy smell" so they don't need frequent bathing, but their ears should be cleaned each week to help prevent infection.

This breed is very quick to learn which makes them easy to train. The owner must patiently assert the fact that he or she is pack leader over the dog, or it may begin to outsmart its master. They are extremely in tune with human emotions and are able to respond accordingly, and are naturally gentle animals that play well with children and other dogs.

This breed is a fairly active one which requires a higher amount of exercise each day. They love to romp in an outdoor yard, and they should also be walked several times a day. If there is a pool, these pups will enjoy being allowed to swim as they are natural water-lovers. They also enjoy playing games of fetch.

Generally this breed is fairly healthy and is able to live up to 16 years of age. It can however be prone to developing hip or elbow dysplasia, which breeders must screen their breeding dogs for as a precaution. They are a floppy-eared dog which can also be susceptible to getting ear infections, so the owner must be sure to keep the dog's ears clean and free of hair.

When considering adopting Australian Labradoodle puppies North Carolina residents should make sure they have the time and patience to dedicate to this bright and sociable companion dog. It is critical to the animal's healthy development that it be given the mental and physical stimulation in requires in order to be well-adjusted and happy.
