Make Extra Money With Sewing Services

By Lawanda Burch

With the state of the economy, unemployment, and a growing trend toward maximizing personal skills, many people are investigating ways of making extra money, or changing careers. Some, with a love for clothing, quilts, or craft making are starting their own sewing services and replacing lost income. Others are altering clothing, making patterns, or designing their own products.

If this sounds appealing, a little planning and organization in what type of sewing features will be offered is a good idea. Most services usually target a few specialized areas, and begin building a customer base. Doing a little planning into what type of services others will find useful to help the business to thrive.

For instance, some are excellent quilt makers, a specialized craft. Others have unique pattern making skills, and could offer consultation services, or offer quilting lessons to those just beginning to learn this craft. Here is also an area that offers a product line, as those with pattern making ability can put together starter kits and sell them to customers, or even on the Internet.

Those with a love for fashion could start a clothing making business, with design, custom clothing and alternation. Those with a knack for design might begin such as business by making a few clothing examples for display when customers come to drop off alterations. Always make known a full list of services that are offered either by including fliers or cards in bags with completed items, or by explaining what is offered with each new customer.

Leather design, repair, and alternation is another highly specialized area that offers potential for instant customers, especially those that can repair damaged or worn leather. Quality designs will also offer the opportunity for offering products and making instant money as more and more people want the products. Offering them slightly below the market price to start with might also help spread word of mouth about the product.

Teaching others a craft has always been an area of income, and that is no less true with sewing. Create a space in the home for teaching this skill by designating a specific room. Decide how much space there is for teaching and don't take on more students than space allows for. Offering classes in beginner to advanced, with separate courses for specialized skills will make teaching opportunities and the money it offers more lucrative.

A few things that will be needed to get started is a versatile, heavy duty sewing machine. The machine should be capable of sewing a variety of products, doing special etchings, and designs, and capable of handling thin and heavy fabrics. Also needed is a cutting board, and steam iron, and ironing board. It's best to place them a good amount of space away from one another in order to give yourself enough room, especially with large projects.

Before purchasing a machine understand the parts of the machine, and make sure it is capable for many small and heavy projects. Make sure the iron is highly professional and can do a variety of things. Investing now in equipment will mean more jobs later. Planning all these things prior to selling or establishing clients will make sewing services valued, sought after, and will create products which become a huge success.
