Learn How A Jacksonville Laser Therapist Can Alleviate Nail Fungus

By Hans Gerhard

About eight percent of adults suffer from onychomycosis at some stage of their lives. If left untreated, this fungal infection of the toenails can lead to embarrassing disfigurement, intense pain and limited mobility. A new Jacksonville nail fungus procedure uses the latest laser technology to destroy the pathogens that cause the infection.

When a nail is attacked by a fungal infection, it thickens, yellows and turns brittle. The edges begin to crumble and the whole toenail may loosen and pull away from its bed. Light pressure exerted on the toes by footwear becomes a source of irritation and discomfort. Toenail infections can have serious consequences for people with diabetes or weak immune systems.

The topical antifungal creams prescribed for onychomycosis are not effective at penetrating the nail. They must be applied every day for up to a year. Oral antifungal drugs are administered over a three month period. Side effects of these medications include skin rashes, nausea, stomach pain and potential harm to the liver.

A laser procedure can now be used to eliminate the fungi that cause onychomycosis. The laser beam uses a precise pulse frequency and wavelength to combat the infection. In clinical studies it was found to have a success rate of 80%, far higher than can be achieved with prescription medications.

Laser therapy is safe and pain-free with no known complications or side effects. The device targets only infected areas and because it produces light without heat, it cannot burn or damage delicate tissue. Patients normally experience no discomfort during a session and can walk out of the clinic immediately afterward.

In most cases, the Jacksonville nail fungus procedure completely eradicates the fungal infection. Healthy new growth will begin to appear within weeks and the toenail will be fully rejuvenated with a healthy appearance in six to nine months. A topical cream may be recommended to help speed up the nail replacement process.
