Decorating Rooms With Fabric Wall Decals

By Lila Barry

Sprucing up a child's room or play center has never been so easy with fabric wall decals. While store bought are fun and easy to apply, they also come with a price tag, if applying a scene or several animals that can be beyond some home budgets. Not only that, but home-made decals establish a personal touch, and allow for applying beautiful scenes and long lasting results for a fraction of the cost. Before going to the expense of painting try this colorful project.

Those who want to try this project will need a pattern, and fabric. Other items needed are a tracing pen, double stick fusible web, and an iron and scissors. Included in this project is the fusible web method, however, there is also the cornstarch method. Do not use silk or dry clean only fabrics if using corn starch. Try this applique method on a small decal first and apply it to test for any damage to walls. If so, find a different method that works for the interior of the home.

This guide instructs how to make a pattern for the project, but keep in mind buying a pattern is also a possibility. Because it is really a design that is needed also using stencils for those that don't like to draw, might be a good choice. Those using big stencils might not be able to find them in stores, so making a design or pattern might not be a choice.

Decide on a pattern before beginning the project. Decide on stencils to be used or make a pattern drawing and the overall design. It is also possible to use cutouts, or anything else that allows for tracing around an outline. If choosing to make one, draw the image on a separate piece of paper or cardboard in case a mistake is made.

For those creating large decals, even life sized that resemble animals or cartoons, or even trees, and forests, buying adhesive in rolls is a good idea. Decide from the beginning what your project will be so enough adhesive is purchased to complete the project. Small jobs can be completed with sheets. Larger jobs with rolls. Take one of the sheets with the fusible webbing and place it on the side of fabric that will be attached to the wall.

Put the pattern made at the beginning and webbing, and trace around pattern and cut out. Remove paper from bottom. Decal is now ready for use once paper has been removed and adhesive is exposed.

Move your hand across the decal from left to right, getting rid of any bubbles as it is applied. Try different places around the room. You won't damage the decal. After deciding where it will be applied, get the iron and press it on decal. The fabric art is now firmly sealed, and will not fall or peel from the wall until removed. The adhesive will not wear out with time because glue will dry firmly when heated first.

If the need arises to remove the fabric wall decals simply lift an edge and remove. It's that simple. Don't worry about removing it because this process will not create any damage to plaster or paint. Make sure removal is the appropriate choice. Once removed it cannot be reapplied without new adhesive.
