Get Rid of your Adult Acne

By Karen Miseneer

The most common skin condition worldwide, is acne. Many of us have acne issues in high school, but we can continue to have the problem well into adulthood. There are some known causes of acne, and propionibacterium is a major reason for the problem to recur repeatedly. Some of the available ways to treat acne will be examined in this article, as well as some helpful techniques that can be done at home.

What factors contribute to acne in adults?

There is a thick, oily material called sebum that the skin will secrete from the sebaceous glands. Skin pores can become clogged with sebum, which traps in bacteria which can flourish inside. This bacterial growth results in inflammation and the formation of acne. For women, more acne can occur during menopause or pregnancy, and in men, it can occur as testosterone is produced.

Treating adult acne

Adult acne can be treated in a number of ways, using a wide variety of techniques. Some treatments will work better for some people, and other types will not. Certain simple measures can be taken that can help reduce breakouts and eventually lead to the acne disappearing.

1. Using cleansing solutions - Cleansing solutions are now easily available over-the-counter and in supermarkets. Sebum secretions are cleaned out, opening the pores.

2. Topical creams - These days, creams that contain benzoyl peroxide are used to treat adult acne. Redness can be lessened, and the spread and amount of acne can be brought down effectively. There are some issues with this treatment for certain people, as flaking and itching can be a problem if the skin becomes too dry.

3. Some people benefit from treatments of antibiotics that a dermatologist or physician may prescribe. Topical antibiotic creams such as clindamycin are extremely helpful in managing acne. Tetracycline is another kind that is prescribed for some patients as an oral medication, in a longer treatment course. Teeth can be stained by the use of tetracyclines though, patients need to be aware of this.

Some effective and simple home remedies

The basic act of washing the skin with warm water and soap is an age old method to reduce acne. There is a drying effect that hot water can have on skin, so this is not advised. Be more careful after washing your face with the towel, do not scrub your face too hard and cause damage, take some care. There are different reasons that people get acne, and it's a good idea to find what triggers it for every individual.

Treatments for more serious acne

These days there are newer treatments that have emerged in the field of dermatology that help manage patients with adult acne. Treatments can include laser therapy, blue light therapy and chemical peels. These more advanced treatment methods will be administered to patients that the dermatologist feels are necessary, after some of the simpler techniques are applied.

Synopsis

Adult acne can be annoying and embarrassing. Simple treatments are available but may not necessarily be effective. When adult acne is a problem, it is wise to consult an experienced dermatologist to get some recommendations on reducing this issue.
