Make a flower bed using old tires

By Gina Portwood

A good way to save on fruit and vegetables is to grow your own, like your parents may have done. It is not difficult to do it and not at all costly. You will thoroughly enjoy the freshness of a garden vegetable. A herb garden is something you can try as well. Store bought produce cannot be as good as that which you grow fresh from the garden. Growing your own produce is very satisfying. Finally, you control what goes into it. As the grower, you are sure there are no preservatives, all is natural and fresh.

Many people who would like to garden, just don't have the room for long rows of carrots or large spaces to grow squash or melons. Therefore people need to look at alternatives. Try planting your garden in some smaller spaces. This works because you can plant, harvest, and plant again during the season and still have enough for your personal needs. Try planting in old tires, it can really work.

Old tires are available free at many outlets. You might them for only $5.00 in other places. You only need four or five, depending on the amount of planting you intend to do. Large jobs will obviously need a lot more, maybe double the amount.

You might think that these old tires don't look that good. Maybe the neighbors will object? Covering them up with something can make them look much better. You can set them in wooden boxes to increase their attractiveness. You can cut them up to form patterns such as pedals on a flower, and paint them on the outside to make them look better. The rims of the tires could be used as a stand.

Decide on a place where you are going to put them and prepare the soil, by cultivating it down to 4 inches. The roots of plants need to grow as deep as possible to be healthy. Get some good potting soil/compost. A local store, Home Depot or a Lowes will stock this. Follow the instructions on planting the seed and fertilize well. It is vital that water well but not too much. Your needs will be filled from the small but efficient garden. Growing your own produce instead of buying it will save you money.
