Choosing The Most Creative Designs For Unique Tattoos

By Raymond Ebersole

It's a lifelong commitment unless you're willing to get painful laser surgery later on. A tattoo will outlast most of your relationships, so it's important to be sure that the design is one you'll want to carry with you into old age. Unique tattoos take time to design, which make them a better option. You won't jump in with your eyes closed if you have to create the design first.

Tattoo designs are like clothes in the sense that they go in and out of style. At one time it was very trendy to have a butterfly on your lower back; now it's known as the 'butterfly tramp stamp'. Chinese symbols, tribal and Celtic designs, fairies and cartoon characters were all the rage at various times. Currently many people seem to prefer designs in a Japanese style.

Following fashion is perfectly okay, except that with a tattoo it will send the wrong message. Instead of showing your uniqueness, you're showing that you're just another sheep in the flock. It sends the message that you're unable to think for yourself or have your own opinions.

Most of the people who later regret their tattoos are those that chose designs that were trendy at the time. Good tattooists often refuse to work with clients who come in wanting the same tattoo as their favorite singer or movie star. They much prefer creating new pieces that nobody else has because they are artists, not copiers.

The best type of design to choose is one that has a special significance for you. If you choose it for its meaning rather than for its aesthetic merit, it's less likely that it will become merely a trend. Aesthetics are important as well but a pretty picture of something you care about shows that it has a special meaning for you. A pretty picture of a fairy is just that: a pretty picture of a fairy.

One way of ensuring your tattoo design is one that only you will have is to design it around a photograph of somebody you care about. A picture of your parents or grandparents works well, as does one of your children. Thank it through, though: Having your current romantic partner etched into your skin forever may seem like a good idea only until you break up.

Special places or events can make for great tattoo designs as well. An animal from home, the mountain at your favorite place or a symbol from a country you've visited will always remind you of why you love that place. Many people also get designs with sayings, lines from a poem or a song or some other text that means a lot to them. As always, you need to consider what you choose. When you're eighty you may not find such special meaning in the lyrics of a Justin Bieber song as you do now.

Before you get your chosen design idea inked into your skin, meet with a tattoo artist. He or she will talk you through the process and will help you create a design. A good tattooist will spend all the time you need on creating the perfect design because skillfully done, unique tattoos are like a calling card.
