How to Select the Perfect Running Shoe for You

By Sam Montogomery

When it comes to shoes, everyone has her or his own needs. The weight, biomechanics, surface that you run on and your foot shape is some of the things that you need to determine in choosing the right running shoes. Your friend's shoes may not suit you.

Even though it may sound selfish, this process is all about you. It does not mean that if your friend, mother or running coach wear the same kind of shoes, it will also be best for you. There are different designs and purposes for each shoe.

You can also find shoes for performance trainers and training flats, or 'go fast' shoes, that are perfect for fast training days. There are also trail shoes to provide certain advantages for runners who spend most of their time on rough terrain.

At times, choosing the correct athletic shoes can be a little confusing, but you can still eliminate this confusion and proceed to finding your ideal shoe.

Regardless what your purpose for running might be, your running experience can be better when you chose the right shoes.

You first need to ask yourself on what your aim is in using these athletic shoes. In choosing the correct footwear, the kind of distance and activity such as road race, marathon, or walking event can play a huge role. Regardless it is on a treadmill or the road, the surface that you are running on can also affect in choosing the right shoes.

Among the significant factors to consider in selecting the correct running shoes is biomechanics. This is your pronation tendency or degree of stability while you are running. Some of the needed requirements in the evaluation of biometrics is the participation of a second party, the help of your coach or another person to observe you properly.

Having someone filming you while running is the ideal way to understand this process. Your chance to observe the nuances of your biomechanics is by watching the frame-by-frame footage of your gait cycle. So, you will be aware of the degree of stability or the pronation that you need in a running shoe.

Once you get your biomechanics, the next thing that you should consider is the type of your foot. In a particular category, foot characteristics will make you understand the shoes that are right for you while biomechanics will help you in choosing the appropriate shoes based on stability. Once you get this information you can get the right sport shoes for you.

Among the things that you will need to consider are your arch type, the width of your foot, past injuries and any inconsistencies in your feet. Having a high arch will require a different level of support in shoes as compared to an individual with a flat arch. Foot width can sometimes be critical to understand since different shoes are created to fit different widths of feet.

For women and men who have overpronate feet, underpronate and high arched feet, pronate and normal arch type, or if you want to race and run fast, there are a lot of comfortable shoes for you. You can visit your local Shoe Clinic to have an idea of what sort of running shoe you should be searching for and how to select running shoes.
