The Basics Regarding Kilimanjaro Safari

By Lynn Foster

Every year about 30,000 tourists visit Tanzania to have the Kilimanjaro safari. Not only do they get a chance to climb the mountain, but they also are able to see the rich wildlife of the area. Mount Kilimanjaro stands at about 5895 meters making it the highest in Africa. It is snow-capped throughout the year even though it is located in very close proximity to the equator. There are about three volcanoes on the mountain and these include Kibo (at 19340 feet), Shira (at 13, 000 feet) and Mawenzi at 16, 896 feet.

The East African region of Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania has a wide variety of wildlife. This includes both plants and animals some of which can only be found in this part of the world. Tourists on the safari have an opportunity to sample different type of wildlife from these three countries. Common animals include elephants, lions, antelopes, rhinos and wildebeests among others.

The distance between the mountain and Serengeti National Park is about 290 kilometers. Another park in close proximity is the Ngorongoro game park. In Serengeti the most spectacular attraction is the Great Wildebeest Migration which is currently regarded as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. As the wildebeests cross the Mara River from Kenya into Tanzania they are hunted by the numerous crocodiles in the river. This happens between July and October every year.

Roads to and from the Serengeti are a quite bumpy and dusty. This makes some tourist prefer flying to the area. Although this option is a little expensive, one is able to save time and therefore see much more wildlife. The Olduvai Gorge is in close proximity. This important site in paleoantropology is about 48 km long.

Other than wildlife, another attraction around Kilimanjaro is the rich culture Chagga people who live around the mountain foot. The group which is the third largest in Tanzania, also populates the slopes of Mount Meru. They are predominantly farmers by profession. Many tour companies have employed a few of them as guides due to their knowledge of the area.

Getting to the peak of the mountain takes about seven days on average. Hurried hiking is not good as it increases the chances of one getting altitude sickness. In addition, one will be excessively exhausted when they get to the top so that they do not get a chance to enjoy the beautiful scenery. The ecological sites on the way up include a rain forest, moorland, heath, an alpine desert and arctic glaciers.

The cost of undertaking the Kilimanjaro safari varies depending on the nature of the package being provided. Considering several companies before making a decision is advised. On average, it costs about 5000 USD to climb the mountain and visit a number of national parks.
