Tips For Handling Dog Aggression Towards Other Dogs

Many pet owners wonder what if anything can be done about dog aggression towards other dogs. Luckily, there are some things that can be done. The require the pet owner to do things in a certain way and may mean a change in thinking. You will have to think more like your animal does. This is not as difficult as it may sound. You will just have to be vigilant in ensuring that one's pet remains in ones control at all times.

Begin when you first bring your new puppy home. Do not keep him or her all to yourself. Take your new pup out for walks, visiting and into as many situations as you can. You should especially allow your new pup to meet animals. This way your pet will grow up thinking that new situations and being around animals is a normal part of life. They will not feel nervous or fearful. This will often mean they will not become aggressive.

Never forgo the leash. Even if you think your canine is the most well behaved on the planet. Keep the leash on. It is imperative that your animal remain under your care and control at all times. Even if it is so that your dog does not have one aggressive bone in his body, there could still be a serious consequence to not using a leash. Your pet may be the one attacked. Without a leash, it will be difficult to break them up and it will also be dangerous.

Do not expect things to go badly when two canines are about to cross paths on a walk. If you think something is going to happen, it is almost a self fulfilling prophecy. You will tense up, your pet will pick up on this and he or she will think something is wrong. This will cause them to act out.

Avoid other canines. If this is a big issue with your pet, do not put him or her in that situation. You can easily cross the street when you see another owner and their pet heading your way. Keep walking calmly away, keep your body pointed in the direction you are going and do not even glance at the animal.

Respect your animal's space. One reason why animals will often fight it because one comes into the others space. This makes one animal feel cornered. Keep walking and put yourself between the two in order to allow your pet to keep its space.

Make it a habit to bring favorite treats along with you. This is a good way to distract your animal. When you see another animal heading your way, distract your own pet with a cookie. This is often enough to keep the concentration on you rather than on another canine.

When dealing with dog aggression towards other dogs it is important to stay vigilant. The more you follow these tips and work toward making a run in with other animals non eventful, the more used to it your canine will become. As they become more used to it and see that nothing happens, they will learn to calm themselves and handle these situations better.
