How Best To Deal With Possum Pest Control

By Bob Waters

Possum pest control is often overlooked, a mistake that many people make. But why is there a need for pest possum control, in the first place?

Possums are normally active at night when everyone is asleep and at this time they are recklessly looking for food, mate or fighting amongst themselves, which can make them very stubborn creatures to deal with. This is why most people try to capture these creatures using traps. This is the reason why a lot of people normally try to trap them and relocate them to some other place very far from their properties and homes. An important thing to always remember is that it is always best to involve well trained professionals in this task since you will get the best results due to their experience in dealing with such pests.

Once the Possums are trapped they should be set free in a place far away like 50 meters away from the edges of your property. Something important to know is that there are some types of possums which can be very stubborn and difficult to trap such as the ring-tailed possum, that is normally a protected animal, which makes it illegal to catch unless you are licensed. Trying to capture one of them on your own can be breaking a few laws.

Many property owners normally decide to protect their properties from any possum attacks by covering all their property so as to prevent their entry. However, this method can be ineffective in the case where there are already possums inside the property, and you would be trapping them inside by sealing it. Once you have trapped them, they will resort to eating through the walls and roofs due to lack of food causing even bigger problems for the property owner.

So as to effectively implement possum pest control, it is important to take into considerations a number of things as a home or property owner. It is never a good idea to try and catch a possum on your own since it is illegal and you can be arrested. Another reason why it is not a good idea is because you do not have the right equipment to catch them. When capturing them you should use an approved cage to put the trapped possum in. This is why you should always use a qualified and licensed pest control manager to do this job.

Look for points of entry and exit for the possums and seal those off. However, make sure that all the possums that are already within the confines of your property have already been caught before sealing off the entries and exits. Possums also like to hide out in bushes and shrubs. They can also cross over fences into your property if the branches of trees around your property are too long. They will also enter your property through trellises and vines on walls and fences, so it would be better if you remove those as well. Talk to your electrician if he could reinforce your electrical wires with piping that would prevent the possum from climbing through them.

You should carefully look at your roof for any broken roof tiles or your walls for any missing bricks since these are the common entry and exit points for possums. In case you have had a home installation done in the recent past, you should make sure the areas where you had to break through walls are resealed properly. You should not the mistake of encouraging the possums since they may seem quite adorable. You may act as an enabler if you leave out food for them every night and although they may start out nice enough, soon they may start bringing their friends along for their nightly feed in your home, which can make you find your property overrun with them.

In case your compound has fruit trees, you should always ensure you pick them once they are ripe since overripe fruits normally fall to the ground and rot, which can easily notify possums and other rodents. You should also carefully get rid of them by putting them in a sealed bag and ensuring that the garbage bins you use are not susceptible to possum attacks. The best results will be obtained if you use the services of licensed pest control experts.
