Alternative Healing Modalities For Physical Health

By Sharlene Fleming

Natural healing therapies are gaining much attention for their ability to promote overall wellness of mind, body and spirit. While it is true that all of these elements are necessary for the total well-being of the person as a whole, to try to learn alternative healing modalities for every aspect of existence all at once would be overwhelming, to say the least. With that in mind, let's start with a single category. Here are some common forms of wellness promotion for the body, also referred to as a person's physical well-being.

Aromatherapy can be used in a variety of applications, from direct inhalation through fragrance diffusers to bath salts to candles. Therapeutic scents are often infused into body lotions and oils, as well. The most common purposes for which aromatherapy is employed include stress reduction, relief of anxiety or depression, and for those who experience difficulty sleeping. Aromatherapy involves utilizing a person's sense of smell to invoke the desired physical response.

Acupuncture is a traditional practice in Eastern medicine which involves strategic placement of thin needles just into the surface of the skin. Those who have an aversion to needles may opt for a similar therapy known as acupressure. Either way, the objective is the same; to stimulate the nerve centers for the purpose of relieving pain, reducing stress, calming allergies, and improving many other chronic health issues. Though acupuncture involves the insertion of needles into the skin, the procedure is generally reported to be painless.

Alternative healing therapies recognize the importance of a person's flow of energy around and throughout the body. Reiki massage is a form of physical therapy that deals with restoring a healthy flow of energy by removing energy blockages, which are often associated with physical conditions within the body. Reiki massage sometimes includes hands-on contact, but the majority of energy work occurs in the vibrational field surrounding the body and therefore requires no actual physical contact.

Yoga is beneficial to the body, mind and spirit, regardless of performance level. In other words, beginners can experience a similar level of benefit as those who are more advanced or experienced in the discipline. Because the benefits of this type of exercise are so readily evident, yoga has become increasingly popular. Related disciplines such as tai chi are gaining popularity for their health benefits, as well.

Chiropractic care centers round promoting proper spinal care. This includes restoring (if necessary) and maintaining proper spinal alignment, which has been linked to a variety of health issues extending far beyond just back and neck pain. A healthy spine is an essential part of a healthy body overall. This fact has been recognized for centuries in Eastern medicine, but is just beginning to gain proper recognition in other parts of the world.

Many of us think of herbs as something we use to flavor our food, but their purpose is much more important that that. The scope of benefits offered by herbalism goes largely unrecognized outside the holistic medicine community, though it is being increasingly added to more traditional wellness routines. Medicinal herbs have their own individual healing qualities and can be administered in a variety of ways.

The various alternative healing modalities typically work in conjunction with one another to promote the highest state of wellness and harmony within an individual. These are a few examples of holistic therapies that are commonly used as a part of an overall wellness routine. Many more naturopathic methods exist to promote a state of optimum health including body, mind and spirit.
