Viral Marketing - Get Your Customers to Do the Marketing for You

By Andy Smith

Viral marketing is still one of the most prolific marketing tools you can use to grow your business. If you employ it in the correct manner, it has the power to take you from obscurity to the "talk of the town" in a matter of days. If you are not sure what viral marketing means, it is a real simple concept. Viral means that it is something that gets passed from person to person and that spreads very quickly, much like a cold virus. Instead of making everyone sick though, you get your product or service spreading out everywhere instead. One perfect example of this concept is YouTube. How many times have you shared a funny video with someone? Videos can become extremely viral very quickly, but other types of information can go viral as well.

Here are a few different viral marketing tools I have used to grow my business: * Viral Video and Audio * Viral eBooks * Viral Workshops, seminars or online courses * Viral Reports In fact, you can make just about anything viral in nature, as long as the tools you create are made to accomplish a few things. Since viral means passed from person to person, you need to think about the reasons why people share information with their friends and colleagues. Think about why you shared a video or an article with someone recently. It was likely that the information you chose had one or all of the characteristics below:

In order for viral marketing to work effectively there are some simple elements that you must consider. Such elements are vital for the proper working of the strategy. Many people begin implementing a viral marketing campaign without understanding the basic fundamentals.

Entertainment. People are always drawn to humor and human-interest stories, and entertaining videos can have terrific viral (pass-along) value. But the real challenge if you aim to produce an entertaining video is to link it effectively to your marketing message. Don't just spend your marketing budget to make people laugh; make them remember you and - better yet - click a link to your website. Here's an entertaining advertisement from OraBrush, and another from Oreo. Warning: humor is a personal taste, so trying to be funny can be very risky and hard to pull off.

What To Do With Your Video Your primary objective for your video is to be found on YouTube (remember those 4.3 billion viewings? They likely include some of your potential customers). YouTube has its own search engine and allows you to do some rudimentary SEO by entering a Title, Description and Tags. Like traditional SEO, take care to enter keyword phrases that your target audience is likely to use in their searches. But this is just a start and there are many ways to build on it. Here are some good suggestions for what you can do next to build your video viewership and turn it into an effective marketing vehicle for your business.

The success of viral marketing also relies heavily on understanding your target audience. Who exactly are you targeting with your message? What do these people have in common in terms of habits and interests? Armed with this information, you can generate a message that calls to such interests and hobbies. Such a message is not only relatable but also gives a common base upon which one can generate the viral marketing campaign. Before embarking on your viral marketing campaign, take the time to understand your target audience, and how you can easily reach them. Design a message that is attractive and draws immediate attention to your audience. The message should also be simple, so that it does not take much time and effort to understand.

Armed with these techniques it's time to embark on your viral marketing journey and find new markets for your products and/or service. What if you just can't make sense of it all? I know how confusing it may appear, with all the information available on back links, SEO, Social Media, but if you really want to succeed with Internet Marketing you will need to learn the single method that governs them all.
