Turn an Unused Room into a Family Game Room

By Autumn Lockwood

Now may be the best time to give your bedroom a makeover if it is a spare room or hardly gets used. Why don't you make that room into a great game room that everyone will love, instead of wasting the space? Most often this can be accomplished on a minimal budget with very little effort. The only items you will need are your extra room, some materials for decorating, and numerous games. Here are several easy ways to transform unused space into a family game room in your own home.

Assessing the Room

The very first step towards creating a game room is thoroughly examining the bedroom. If you have already got furniture in the bedroom, you will have to give some consideration as to what you will do with it. In some instances, you might be able to re-purpose the bedroom furniture items so that you can keep on utilizing them in your new game area. Although it's likely that there will be items that simply won't work in a game area, such as the bed. In some cases, you might want to simply store these items in the event that you need them later on. You could also donate them to charity or perhaps sell them in a garage sale or on an online auction site. When the room is emptied out, take a look at the walls as well as the floor. If you decide that you need to repaint the bedroom it is a good idea to do it before you begin bringing furniture back into the room. Fun colorful walls are a great way to spruce up a game room and make it exciting.

The Perfect Furniture to Put in a Game Area

Although the furniture items you include will obviously be somewhat based upon the kinds of games you plan to play, there are a couple of items that are always useful. A good sturdy table and chair set, large enough for your whole family to sit at, can often be an indispensable part of the game room. Tables are usually a great thing to use for board games and card games. On the other hand, if you intend to play mostly video games in your room, then you might want to concentrate on a television set, an entertainment center, and comfortable seating pieces like chairs, a small sofa, or a loveseat. If you have hardwood or tile flooring in the room, including an area rug can make sitting on the flooring to play games a much more comfortable experience.

Game Room Redecorating Tips

You can have plenty of fun decorating your family game area. Family pictures placed in wood picture frames can serve as wall artwork. Or you may even hang old game boards made out of wood on your walls as a creative design. There are also wallpaper patterns out there which have a game room theme. You may even make a cool chair rail border around the walls of your room using just some playing cards put up end to end. Just attach them to the wall using wallpaper border paste. You may also use antique picture frames to display game instructions, old-fashioned game board boxes, or perhaps other game-related materials as wall artwork.

So don't let that spare bedroom go unused any longer. Begin turning it into a game room right away.
