Withdrawal With Alcohol Detoxification

By Joe Yanz

The more common name for Alcohol Detoxification is Detox. People who consume large mounts of alcohol and have become dependent on it are suggested to undergo Detox. Withdrawing abruptly may not be quite easy once you have developed the habit of taking large amounts of alcohol. The "high" that you get after having alcohol is desired more and more once your body gets used to a huge intake of alcohol.

A short course of medicine is suggested in Detox with the help of which the withdrawal symptoms are greatly reduced. Trembling, sweating, craving for more alcohol, nausea and in some rare cases convulsions are some of the withdrawal symptoms that might be observed. People have been reported to have delirium and tremors apart from the other withdrawal symptoms. Due to withdrawal symptoms the person may feel dehydration. Death has been reported in some rare cases caused by the withdrawal symptoms.

The usual Detox medicine is the Chlordiazepoxide. The course of medicine is started with a high dosage on the first day prescribed by a general practitioner. After the medicine has been taken for 5 to 7 days the dosage is gradually reduced. The withdrawal symptoms this way are greatly reduced as the dose of the medicine is reduced.

Success of Detox lies in the fact that the person undergoing withdrawal treatment does not take alcohol during the process. It would be useless to take Detox medication if the person carries on taking alcohol too. A nurse is usually there to check that the person would not give in. The person is checked whether he/she is drinking or not with the help of a Breathalyzer.

A spouse, parents or a friend can be of great support when the person is taking treatment because they can provide emotional support to them. They can help them giving them medicine as and when required. Taking the medicine as prescribes and coping well with the withdrawal symptoms will result in the treatment to be a success. People who do not cooperate will fail to recover and their treatment will go to waste.

During Detox people usually find themselves having difficulty to sleep at night. Withdrawal from alcohol needs a lot of determination and willpower. The withdrawal symptoms are reduced if the medicine is taken otherwise they are severe if the medicine is not taken. Vitamin supplements are prescribed when a person is undergoing alcohol detoxification medication.
