By Aneron Kepasil

Gout is a type of arthritis that occurs when uric acid crystals accumulate in the joints. Gout usually affects the large joint of the big toe but can also affect other joints, including the knee, ankle, foot, hand, wrist and elbow. The shoulders, hips or spine can also be affected during the later stages of gout. The symptoms of gout usually appear suddenly, and can last anywhere from a few hours to several days.

Alternative treatments of an acute attack of gout may involve bed rest, immobilization of the affected part and local application of heat or cold. Management of gout also may involve attempts to control the rate of uric acid formation by having the individual follow a low purine diet. Such a diet excludes sweetbreads, liver, kidney, poultry, fish, alcohol, rich pastries, and fried foods. To promote uric acid clearance by the kidneys, individuals with gout will usually be encouraged to drink fluids frequently.

Treating gout naturally may take some time. It depends on the amount of toxins accumulated in the body. Eating high protein foods increase the risk of gout. It is advisable to consume vegetarian sources of protein for those suffering from gout. Eating legumes, sesame, flax and apricot nuts can help in treating gout.

Gout is typically associated with eating meats that contain a high amount of iron, such as liver. Some vegetables also have high amounts of purine. Purine rich foods such as lentils, asparagus, cauliflower, broccoli and dried beans and beans contribute to the development of gout. Even normally healthy are not safe from purine content. Oatmeal, wheat bran, and wheat germ extract can cause problems for gout sufferers if they are consumed in excess.

Purine rich foods are not the only factor that can contribute to a person developing gout. Obesity causes the body to produce more uric acid. Keep as close as possible to your ideal body weight to further reduce your risk.
