How about the absolute top spot of the search engines for your best keyword?
I bet a lot. The search engines have made fortunes for many people and businesses.
I'm one of the fortunate folks who have benefitted tremendously from the search engines. But it wasn't without any work.
SEO is hard work; requiring patience, persistence, learning, trial and error, and tedious work.
But is there anything as thrilling as getting to the top spot for a great keyword? Well, yeah there is, but in the realm of internet marketing, achieving a top spot on the search engines is the holy grail.
Great content generally won't get you ranking in the top spot for competitive keywords. Some marketers talk about writing content so good that hundreds and thousands of other websites will link to it propelling your content to the top of the search engines.
Sure, this can happen, but it's not going to happen for the bulk of articles written. Especially for small business websites writing informative articles for their local customers.
Is CNN going to link to an accountants article about personal tax exemptions in Idaho? Not likely. Ain't gonna happen. That's where SEO comes in.
As long as the article is well optimized, then it's up to you or your SEO consultant to get some great backlinks. The fact is backlinks work. Sure, social media is playing a bigger role in ranking, but backlinks are still gold.
You could search in the search engines "how to build backlinks" and be presented dozens of methods. But not all backlinking methods are equal. One stand-out method is blog commenting.
The reason blog commenting is effective is it's efficient and you can get backlinks from web pages that have a high PR or will have a high PR without having to write a full article (i.e. guest blogging). Moreover, your comment with a backlink shows up on a website that chances are that website owner is promoting. Your backlink power piggybacks on the efforts of that webmaster.
