Choosing Your Hydroponic Gardening Supplies

By Nelda Rich

Choosing which hydroponic gardening supplies to buy will depend on the types of plants you're going to grow and the system you'll be using for them. A system called the Hydro Drip, drips the nutrients onto the roots of the plants and the remainder that has dripped can be used again later. A system called Ebb & Flo, floods the plant at its roots with the nutrient solution at interval times that you set and it also drains the solution that is excess after the set time to allow oxygen to go to its roots.

There is also a technique called the Nutrient Film. With this system a film of slow moving nutrient and fertilizer solutions run down angled routes into the roots. You may also collect and reuse the remainder. The fourth system is the Aeroponic and this one is used often in greenhouses. This creates fine mists of nutrients that rain down onto the plants.

The least expensive system is the Wick. This one does not require a pump, it uses a wick from a candle of a thicker lantern type wick to move the nutrients from the growing medium to the roots of the plant. The downside to this system is that it can make the plants too wet for healthy growth. These five different types of systems use similar supplies so you will always be able to find what you are after.

The things you will need to buy may include; odor control, lighting systems for cooling and hydro, huts, pumps, air cleaners, fans. These items are not expensive even though they might seem like it and they are not hard to use even though you may originally assume plants need soil to grow, the truth is they don't.

Hydroponics work best in small rooms like apartments or even classrooms. The plants themselves will benefit as they won't be subjected to diseases and pests that are found outside. You, also will benefit because you won't ever have to pull out a week, work with soil or dig anything.

Gardening with hydro is an option that is attractive and when you have the correct tools, you will have a garden that flourishes. Other advantages, are that plants grown in this way grow quicker and let you be a gardener all year around.

To find out the best system for you, choose what you want to grow first and then you will be able to decide what supplies you need. E. G., ebb and flow or drip systems are the right choices for growing, tomatoes, peppers or cucumbers. Talk to the consultants at your local supply store if you are not too sure which system will suit you and your needs or research by yourself before choosing the right equipment to buy.
