Heavy Metal Music With Skid Row Albums

By Missy Ray

This American heavy metal band was formed in 1986 in Toms River in New Jersey. With five full-length Skid Row albums to date, and having sold over 20 million copies, the band is definitely at the forefront of the heavy metal music scene. Unlike most bands, it took them only three years to finally release their debut album 'Skid Row'. They are most successful during the late 1980s and the early 1990s.

It was Rachel Bolan and Dave "The Snake" Sabo who got the band started. There have been some band member changes throughout the years, the most notable was the departure of Sebastian Bach. It happened when Bach wanted the band to open for KISS, however, the rest of the group did not want it. They had a falling out resulting to Bach's departure. The current line up of the band includes: Johnny Solinger, Scotti Hill, Rob Hammersmith and of course, the two founders.

They also experienced some difficulties with their relationship with Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora. While they were still getting started, they had given up a big percentage of their publishing rights to the two members of Bon Jovi. This caused a big problem as the band started to become famous. Eventually Sambora gave in and gave back a percentage of the publishing rights to the band.

Their debut album, 'Skid Row', was released on the 24th of January, 1989. The album was been given the platinum record five times by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Impressively for a first album, it was able to rank no. 6 in the Billboard 200. Because of their new found popularity, a lot of fans started to look for some Skid Row merch and other items.

Their next album was titled 'Slave to the Grind'. It was released on June 11, 1991 and can be thought of as one of their most successful albums as it was able to reach the number 1 spot of the Billboard 200. It was also a change in the band's musical style as the album featured deeper toned sound as well as lyrics that tackled the social situations and problems of the period.

The third of the Skid Row albums was the 'Subhuman Race' which was released on the 28th of March, 1995. It was notable for being the last album that featured Sebastian Back in the vocals as he had left the band soon after album was released. The album featured the chance in the band's sound from heavy metal to alternative metal.

'Thickskin', their next album after almost 10 years since the last, was released on August 5, 2003. It was notable for featuring for the first time their new lead vocalist, Johnny Solinger. But another band member had also left and this time it was Phil Varone.

Their latest album was released on the 24th of October, 2006 and was titled 'Revolutions per Minute'. It was negative received by many music critics. The album was notable for it again paired the band with Michael Wagener, the famed producer who also produced their second album.

These Skid Row albums, although not all experienced great acceptance and kind words from the critics, still helped the band achieve the popularity they are enjoying today. Their studio albums and band merch are continuously in great demand by their fans who want to have a piece of a great American heavy metal band.
