Transforming Your New House Into A Home

By Margret Wilkons

Moving into a new place and decorating can be challenging. It's a blank canvass and you have the paintbrush to create pictures. If you have no idea what you are going to paint in the first place, then you will be staring at a blank canvass for a long time. Decorating a new house is starting from scratch. It can't even be called a home yet, as you have not yet injected yourself into the place. This is where your decorating project should begin.

The amount of work to be done will depend on what you have to work with but even a brand new construction can always use a personal touch. This can be done very simply by hanging pictures or by painting the walls, but you need to start somewhere.

Start with deciding the things you like - colors, design, decorations, things, etc. Choose a theme. Do you like the rustic feel of an old cottage? The fresh atmosphere of a beach house? Or is it the wild side of a mountain cabin? Are you a city girl at heart who prefers a contemporary style? Knowing which kind of home interior you most associate with will make decorating less of a task but more of a fun activity.

Use things that you like. Add personal touches like photographs, favorite artworks, travel souvenirs and collections. You want your home to have an inviting ambiance to it, as well as to give a comfortable and relaxing feel.

It is always a good idea to cover any floor with a few area rugs. They add interest to a mostly forgotten area of the room. Rugs come in an almost unlimited amount of designs, sizes, and prices. The best ways to pick your perfect rug is to first stay within the guidelines of your overall design and then measure your room. If a rug is too big for the area it will look like a failed attempt to carpet the space, and if it is too small it will look out of place. Generally the rule of thumb is to have a rug that is large enough to place a few piece of furniture around the perimeter but still have plenty of space to see the flooring behind some of those pieces.

It's fun to decorate a new house because it's somewhat an introduction between you and your new place. Don't be afraid to show yourself. In doing so, you will find yourself a real home, a place that you will enjoy for many years.
