By Kristaria Dawson

When you or a child has taken a liking to a particular stuffed animal, whether it be something that is stored on a shelf or in a cabinet or even played with every day, it's never a good thing to see it get dirty and damaged from time. Stains and dust are highly invasive annoyances that aren't able to be stopped, but it is possible to wash or clean your favorite plush toy without ruining it! Regardless of the amount of soil on your plush animal, there are tips below that can help you save your stuffed toy.

Dingy From Dust

We all know we can't avoid dust. When our house get a dust covering, we dust it. When your stuffed animals get dust on them, why not dust them too? In the case of an animal that is owned by a child, dust may not be an issue. Animal displayed on shelves will attract dust so you will need to do a little cleaning of these to keep them nice. You can wipe the surface fur with a damp wash cloth or a disinfectant wipe. If this doesn't freshen it up enough for your taste, you can throw the animal in the dryer with a few dryer sheets. After ten minutes on high, you should have killed off any germs living inside and take care of the dust and any smells it may have picked up.

It Needs A Bath

Maybe your item needs a little more thorough cleaning because your plush bear or plush dog ends up on the floor often. There are a few things you can do in this case. For some stuffed animals, you can throw them in the wash on gentle with cold water. If you are going to do this, you should place the animal in a fine mesh bag or pillow case that is knotted shut. This will keep all its parts safe from snagging on the internal parts of your washer. When you go to dry it, use the lowest setting. When you take them out of the dryer, make sure you straighten out the plush toys in case anything has shifted in the dryer. If you don't trust using the washer and fear this may ruin the beloved plush toys, you can place them in a tub with softener and detergent and hand wash them, and hang them outside or inside on a rack to dry.

Miracle Needed

These toys have had a hard life. But even covered in dirt and unidentifiable gunk, there are ways to clean them. Those terrible stains don't have to be irreversible. Whether they are beloved childhood toys or your favorite Valentine's Day present from a loved one, miracles do happen. Make sure you get some carpet cleaner and a toothbrush. The toothbrush is a good size brush for delicate toys, as anything bigger could ruin them. This is especially good for spotting stains. Just squirt a little cleaner on the brush and gently scrub on the worst spots. Once you have done this, rinse the plush animal in cold water, until the water runs clear. Then you can put the stuffed toy in the dryer for 10 minutes. It will most likely not be completely dry, but that's okay, as then you can let it air dry. Don't forget to use a disinfecting cloth, which is especially important if its toy for a small child.

There are other ways to clean plush toys, but the ones mentioned above are the best at getting the job done. When you are faced with plush toys that seem beyond intervention, place a little effort and carpet cleaner into the mix and you may find a fresh toy when complete!
