How To Apply Oxygen Bleach On Roof Shingles ?

By Scott Rodgers

When it is about protecting your home from the external agents such as air, water, sunlight, dust etc. the roofs serve the required purpose. However, it becomes your duty to pay an extra attention towards the maintenance of these roofs and their components.

One of the components of the roof that takes the brunt of extreme weather on it, is the roof shingle. All the shingles on the roof not only hold the entire architecture together but also add a protection element to the underlying structure of the roof.

If you notice that the old shine and polish of your shingles is fading away quickly then it is time to bring in an oxygen bleach solution. It is a chemical agent that removes stains and grease from the roof shingles by the direct application of oxygen.

Climb up the roof with the help of an extension ladder and observe the roof area and the associated shingles. Wash the roof area with plain water and rinse it with a broom or a finely bristled brush to remove debris and other foreign materials from the surface of the roof.

Mix a moderate amount of water in the oxygen bleach solution to prepare a prescribed solution. Make sure that the compound doesn't become much dilute. Take any hint from the label of the oxygen solution bottle to develop the solution.

Grab a garden sprayer and fill it's repository with the prepared solution. Take it to the roof and spray the oxygen bleach on the roof components including the shingles. Spray with an increased intensity in the areas where the stains look stubborn and rigid. Follow the initial coating of the bleach with another coating such that all the dark and untidy areas of the shingles are well covered. Let the bleach accumulate on it's surface and after a span of 15-20 minutes, wash off the setting. Before washing the solution off the shingle surface, scratch the stains and grease with the garden hose. Keep the mouth of the hose close to the surface of the shingle and roof while watering the roof.

By the time you finish off the watering job, the stains would have been removed from the shingles. If however the stain persists then apply another coating of the oxygen bleach solution and wash it off.

The complications however have to be handled by a professional roofer only.
